What should I look for when buying an energy efficient spa pool?

A number of factors influence spa pool energy efficiency, but the most important is quality. By buying from a trusted brand that invests in innovation and uses the finest materials, particularly insulation, you can be confident of finding a spa pool that is better for both the planet and your hip pocket. Other considerations to make when buying an energy efficient spa pool include:

The larger the spa pool, the more energy it will tend to use, so avoid going too big just for the sake of it.

By placing your spa pool in a more protected location, away from the elements, you can retain more heat and use less power.

The importance of energy efficiency

A spa pool forms a luxurious addition to any home – a place for healing, relaxation, romance and fun. But luxurious doesn’t have to mean expensive. By choosing a Hot Spring, you can enjoy one of the world’s most sumptuous spa pool experiences, and reduce your ongoing costs while you do it. Packed with a suite of energy efficient technologies, a Hot Spring spa pool is an investment that can pay itself back over time through incredible savings.

The most efficient insulation

Insulation is the most important factor in spa pool energy efficiency, as it minimises the use of the heater by keeping the water warmer for longer. An innovative technology like Hot Spring’s multi-density full foam insulation can save you $365-$2000 a year when compared to a poorly insulated spa.

Hot air induction jets

Hot Spring’s clever hot air induction jets are designed to ensure no warmth goes to waste. They transfer heat generated within the insulated equipment compartment to the water by re-injecting it through the jets. This innovation doesn’t use any extra electricity but can take real strain off the heat pump!

Hot Spring energy efficient spas feature

Hot Spring's energy-efficient spas are designed with superior insulation to retain heat and block out the cold, complemented by an insulated cover that perfectly seals the spa's edge. Their innovative machinery ensures a luxurious soaking experience at a reduced cost, making relaxation both sophisticated and economical.

Insulated spa pool covers

Many spa pool owners think of covers as something to keep their water free of debris. But what a cover keeps in is just as important as what it keeps out. A cover plays a critical role in spa pool heat retention, and a fully insulated, tightly fitting and ultra-durable Hot Spring cover does this better than any other.

A dedicated circulation pump

Most spa pools rely on their jets to circulate water, which can be energy-intensive (not to mention noisy and potentially damaging). A Hot Spring spa pool fitted with a SilentFlo 5000 circulation system, meanwhile, keeps your spa water constantly in motion while using the same power as a 40W light bulb!

How much do energy efficient spa pools cost?

At Hot Spring we focus on building spa pools that are not only luxurious, but that cost customers less over the lifetime of the machine. We do this by building long-lasting spa pools out of the highest quality parts and materials, and by making significant investments in the development of energy- and resource-saving technologies.

A Hot Spring spa pool isn’t a cost, it’s an investment. And it’s one that pays itself back over time, by lowering your electricity bills, by reducing your need to drain and refill your spa, and by ensuring you can soak in your spa for years or even decades to come, through quality construction and the guaranteed supply of spare parts for 20 years (something no other spa brand offers).

Best placement for an energy efficient spa pool

The placement of your spa pool will impact its energy efficiency. Indoor spa pools, like those placed in sun rooms, are more protected from the elements, so don't have to work as hard to retain their heat. The same goes for outdoor spa pools placed in enclosed decks or under verandas and patios. If you're willing to put a little more effort into the installation of your Hot Spring, inground spa pools can be insulated by the surrounding earth to increase efficiency, all while being more accessible and organic addition to your backyard.

No matter whether you want an inground, above-ground, indoor or outdoor spa pool, Hot Spring spas are guaranteed to be energy efficient, helping you to save serious money over the life of the machine.

Are energy efficient spa pools high maintenance?

The short answer is no: the most energy efficient spas also tend to feature high-end systems that minimise work and maximise play for hot tub owners.

We have had a Hot Spring Vanguard Spa Pool for 23 years and it is still serving us well. After three major back surgeries during the past three years, this pool has been a great help in my rehab and recovery. My latest good experience is related to treating plantar fasciitis. Several years ago I had this problem in my left foot and it took several months and three cortisone injections for it to finally heal. Earlier this year the same problem developed in my right foot. After several weeks with no improvement, I came across an article on the internet that explained my problem. For the first 2-3 weeks of the problem, the recommended treatment is good... antiinflammatory mediciness, icing, stretching, massage, etc. But after the inflammation subsides, these treatments become counter productive and actually hinder healing and recovery. What is needed is better blood circulation in that area of the foot. That's where the spa pool came into the picture. Each morning I sat in my pool with the jet in the foot well massaging the bottom of the foot. Almost immediately I felt relief from the plantar fasciitis symptoms and within about a week the pain was gone. I told my physical therapist about my experience and she told me later that she had passed the information on to another patient who then had the same good results. I think the Hot Spring pools are especially effective because the pressure of the jets is so strong with such a powerful pump and with only water being pumped out and not just air bubbles!

We are so pleased with our Propel Hot Springs Spa Pool that we purchased off Verla at the Albany branch. The salt water system is amazing and so easy to use and maintain. The team at Albany are very helpful and knowledgeable and we would highly recommend them. I don’t know what we’d do without our spa- having active outdoor jobs means that our recovery time is really important. This spa helps so much.
Thanks Verla and team.

Frequently asked questions

Hot Spring spa pools are the most energy efficient spas in New Zealand. That’s not an opinion – it’s a fact. We are also the only spa brand in New Zealand to have our spa running costs independently tested in a lab, and to have published the results. What were those results? Our spas are the most efficient on the market, with running costs as low as $1 a day.

Energy efficient spa pools are defined by a few factors. Hot Spring spas are built from the highest quality materials, feature high-end insulation to keep more heat in, and are packed with technological innovations designed to minimise power use, from precise temperature control to hot air induction jets.

If you choose a Hot Spring, the running costs of your spa pool will generally be lower if you leave it heated all the time. Our high performance, energy efficient spa pools cost as little as $1 a day to run, and this incredible efficiency means that it can be cheaper to keep your water heated 24/7 versus turning it off and heating it back up again!

This is especially the case if you use your spa pool regularly. If you’re going away for a week or more, it may be worth turning your Hot Spring spa pool off to conserve energy.

In terms of power use, the energy that your spa pool uses will be determined by a few different factors: spa size, water temperature, frequency of use, feature list, and most importantly, energy efficiency.

As New Zealand’s most energy efficient spa brand, Hot Spring machines can be run for as little as $1 a day. But it’s important to understand that this figure represents a baseline, and that your power use, and electricity rates in your local area, will define how much your spa pool actually costs to run. You can get an estimate of your monthly running costs, based on spa model and location, with our energy efficiency calculator.

Yes, turning the temperature of your spa pool water down a few degrees is one of the simplest ways to lower your energy use and power bills, as it reduces the amount of work your spa pool heater has to do.

Another way to minimise power use is to retain as much of that heat as possible. This starts by choosing a well insulated spa pool with a tightly fitting, fully insulated cover, like a Hot Spring. Heat rises, so you should lock that cover on your spa pool whenever it’s not in use. You might also consider installing your spa pool in a place that is a little more protected from the elements.
