Swim spa dimensions and sizes

Swimming is one of the best all-round forms of exercise, but a full-sized pool isn't realistic for most New Zealand backyards. A swim spa gives you an endless swim in a fraction of the space. So how big is a swim spa, and which size suits your home?

This guide breaks down Endless Pools® swim spa dimensions by model, with advice on choosing the right size for how you'll actually use it.

How big is a swim spa?

Swim spas in the Endless Pools® range run from 3.66 m to 6.10 m long. Every model shares the same 2.26 m width, so length is the dimension that changes most. That gives a footprint from roughly 8.3 m² for the most compact models up to about 13.8 m² for the dual-zone systems.

Unlike a lap pool, a swim spa doesn't need length to give you a proper swim. The current moves towards you while you swim in place, so there are no walls to turn at and no laps to count. Length mainly adds room for seating, a separate spa zone or a play area.

Which swim spa size is right for you?

The best size depends less on how far you want to swim and more on who will use it and why. Start with your main goal, then check it fits your space.

For families wanting a pool alternative

If your swim spa is mainly for play and time together, seating and a safe space for kids matter most. The RecSport® R-Series is built for this. At 3.66 m long, the R220 seats up to nine adults and includes a 76 cm deep reef area where younger children can splash safely. It fits many urban sections where a traditional pool simply won't.

The R500 adds length at 4.57 m, giving you more room to swim while keeping a compact footprint of around 10.3 m².

For swimmers and fitness training

Serious swimmers need a current that's wide and deep enough to swim naturally, rather than extra length. The E-Series Hydrodrive™ Swim Machine moves up to 19,000 litres of water per minute, creating a laminar current that's wider than your body and deeper than your stroke. You can adjust the pace up to a 1:14/100m challenge.

The E500 and E550 deliver this at 4.58 m long. Step up to the 5.18 m E700 if you'd like extra room for other water exercise, such as a rowing kit or aquabike.

For rehabilitation and low-impact exercise

For recovery or joint-friendly fitness, depth and a controlled current matter more than length. The E-Series stands 1.47 m high, giving room to walk or jog with water supporting your body. Pair it with the optional underwater treadmill for low-impact conditioning without the strain of land-based exercise.

If you'd also like a hot hydromassage soak, the dual-zone E2000 and X2000 at 6.10 m have two separate bodies of water. Set the swim side to a cool 27°C for exercise and the spa side to 39°C for relaxation.

Key takeaways:

  • Families get the most from the RecSport® R-Series, with up to nine seats and a dedicated reef area on the R220.
  • Swimmers should prioritise current quality over length, which makes the E500 or E550 a strong fit.
  • Dual-zone models suit households wanting a cool workout and a hot soak at the same time.

How much space do you need for a swim spa?

You need more space than the swim spa's footprint alone. Allow room around it for access, cover removal and servicing. Your local Hot Spring® expert will confirm the exact clearance during an on-site inspection.

Base and weight

A filled swim spa is heavy, so it needs a solid, level base such as a reinforced concrete pad. For example, the R220 weighs 805 kg empty and around 5,680 kg when filled with water and nine adults. Your dealer can supply pad specifications for your chosen model.

Delivery and access

With every model 2.26 m wide, check that gates, driveways and side paths can fit the unit, or plan for a crane or hiab lift. Hot Spring® coordinates crane access as part of your installation plan.

Power

Swim spas need a dedicated high-amp electrical supply installed by a licensed electrician. Talk to your dealer early so power is ready before delivery day.

Swim spa vs lap pool: how do the sizes compare?

A swim spa gives you an endless swim in far less space than a lap pool. Here's how they compare:

Swim spa

Traditional lap pool

Swimming

Swim in place against a current, with no turns

Swim laps, turning at each wall

Space needed

From around 8.3 m²

Typically much longer and larger

Installation

Self-contained unit, ready for water in a fraction of the time

Months of excavation, consents and trades

Year-round use

Heated and insulated for all seasons

Often seasonal without costly heating

Extras

Spa seating, hydromassage and dual-zone options

Usually swimming only

Because swim spas are compact and self-contained, they can go into tight courtyards where a traditional pool is physically impossible. If you have the space, you also keep room for other parts of your outdoor living area.

Key takeaways:

  • Allow clearance around your swim spa for access, cover removal and servicing.
  • Plan for a reinforced concrete pad and a dedicated high-amp electrical supply.
  • Check delivery access for a 2.26 m wide unit, or arrange a crane lift.

Frequently asked questions about swim spa sizes

What is the smallest swim spa?

The RecSport® R200 and R220 are the most compact in the Endless Pools® range, at 3.66 m long and 2.26 m wide, with a footprint of around 8.3 m².

What is the largest swim spa?

The dual-zone E2000 and X2000 are the largest at 6.10 m long. They include a separate spa zone with its own temperature control.

Is a longer swim spa better for swimming?

Not necessarily. Swim quality depends on the current more than the length. The E-Series Swim Machine creates a smooth, laminar current in a 4.58 m model.

How deep is a swim spa?

Endless Pools® models stand 1.27 m to 1.47 m high, with E-Series and dual-zone models at the deeper end. Check the model page for interior depths.

Can I see swim spa sizes in my backyard before I buy?

Yes. The Hot Spring® AR App lets you visualise a swim spa in your space, and your local dealer can visit for an on-site inspection.
